1. NAME
The organisation shall be known as THE SANGEETHA OF THE U.K
2. The registered office of the organisation will be situated at Croydon Borough.
3 OBJECTS
3.1 To advance the general welfare of the people of Indian as well as Srilankan origin who share common linguistic and cultural heritage irrespective of their national geographical origins or connections.
3.2 To advance and promote recreation, leisure and social life of the above inhabitants (3.1) without distinction of sex, race, disabilities or of political, religious or other beliefs. The organisation is committed towards furthering the artistic, intellectual and the cultural values of the Indian/Srilankan tradition so as to contribute to the mainstream and other values of the local community.
3.3 To undertake any altruistic activity that will alleviate poverty, promote education and help the disabled members to bring them back to the mainstream of society
3.4 To promote good community relations between the people of Indian/Srilankan origin and the local inhabitants of all races and origins.
4 The organisation will be non-party in politics and non-sectarian in religion.5 MEMBERSHIP
5.1 The membership is primarily open to people who are of Indian/Srilankan origin.
5.2 Executive Committee has the right of extending membership to people whose contribution will help in the development of creative arts, culture and welfare of the community as specified in the clause 3.1
5.3 Individuals who aspire to become members of the organisation has to sign an oath of allegiance to SANGEETHA OF THE U.K.
5.4 Executive Committee has the right to refuse membership to any individual who, in the opinion of the executive committee, shall not carry out activities of the organisation consistent with the spirit of the constitution. The decision of the executive committee refusing the membership can only be revoked by a two by third majority by the members present in the AGM
5.5 Membership of the organisation is open primarily to those who are residents in the London Borough of Croydon and the surrounding vicinity. Members from other areas may be accepted subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.
5.6 The number of individuals who could remain as members of the organisation at the same time is decided by the executive committee. This number can be increased or decreased by a majority decision by the members present in AGM.
5.7 The organisation from time to time has the right to invite interested individuals to become honorary/associate members and they will enjoy voting rights at the meeting of the Organisation.
5.8 The executive committee shall have the power to co-opt additional members in the event of a casual vacancy and of a special need. The co-opted members shall continue as members of the organisation unless they are dismissed on disciplinary grounds.
6 REMOVAL OF MEMBERS
6.1 Any member who disobeys the rules and decisions of the organisation or who works against the object of the organisation can be removed by the decision taken in a special meeting of the organisation convened for the purpose, such decision being supported by not less than 2/3 of the members participating in that meeting.
6.2 A member who has been removed shall have no right either to get back any amount he has paid to the organisation or to put forward any claim to the assets or institutions to the organisation
7 GENERAL MEETING
7.1 The General meeting for each year shall be held every year within fifteen months after the last preceding general meeting at a place prescribed by the organisation. General meeting described above may be called as ordinary annual general meetings. All other meetings are extraordinary meetings.
7.2 The paramount right for the management of the organisation vests in the general body. For the sake of convenience of management, the rights of general body may be delegated to the executive committee, provided it does not violate the provisions of the constitution.
8. OFFICERS
The organisation shall elect at the general meeting the following Officers:
a. President
b. Secretary
c. Chairman
d. Vice Chairman
e. Assistant Secretary
f. Cultural Secretary
g. Assistant Cultural Secretary
h. Sports secretary
i. Charity convenor
j. Treasurer
and such other officers as it may seem necessary, from time to time, for the conduct of its business. These officers shall be elected for a duration of three years.
9 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
9.1 There shall be an executive committee consisting of twelve members elected at the General Meeting.
9.2 The executive committee shall have the power to co-opt additional members in the event of a casual vacancy and of a special need. This will be subject to a simple majority of the executive itself. The co-opted members shall continue as members of the Executive Council unless they are dismissed on disciplinary grounds.
9.3 It shall be the business of the Executive committee to develop and carryout the General policy and business of the organisation.
9.4 The executive Committee shall have the power to appoint Sub-Committees and its members for all purposes, should there is any special need to do so. The members of the sub-committee need not be the members of the Executive.
10 QUORUM
No business shall be transacted in general meeting or other meetings without a quorum. The quorum of the general meeting shall be twenty percent of the total membership.
11. MEMBERSHIP FEE
The amount of membership fee shall be decided by the Executive Committee from time to time. The executive Committee shall have the power to terminate current individual membership on reasonable grounds subject to full discussions by the executive who shall be responsible for justifying their action.
12 PRESIDENT
Whenever the President is present at any meeting of general body, he shall preside over the meeting.
If the president and Vice president are absent and even if present decline to occupy the chair any member present may be elected to preside over the meeting.
In all meetings where there are difference of opinion, decisions shall be taken by majority of votes and when votes are equal, the President shall exercise his casting vote.
13 SECRETARY
The secretary shall discharge all special functions placed upon him by the organisation or the executive committee and all other functions which are necessary for the discharge of the responsibilities entrusted to him by the organisation.
14 TREASURER
The treasurer shall have the powers to keep and deposit all amounts of the organisation that come into his possession in the manner prescribed by the executive committee, to inspect the accounts and the cash balance of the organisation and to report thereon and to get inpleaded in all suits where organisation is a party unless otherwise decided by the executive committee, and to conduct them according to the directions of the organisation.
15 INCOME AND EXPENDITURE ACCOUNT
Proper accounts showing the income and expenditure and every Item therein and assets and liabilities of the organisation shall be maintained. Records of the accounts shall be kept in the office of the organisation or in any place as decided by the executive committee.
16 ADVISORY BODY
The organisation shall set-up an advisory body to obtain advise on all matters that will promote the aims and objectives of the organisation. The advisory members can be from any community. They will not, however, enjoy voting rights.
17 PATRONS
The organisation can become patrons of other organisations. Equally, other organisations can become patrons of SANGEETHA OF THE U.K
18 FINANCE
In addition to membership fees, the executive committee shall have the power to raise funds and donations, borrow loans and mortgage any assets of the property in pursuit of promoting aims and objectives of the organisation. The treasurer shall have the powers subject to the directions of the organization to receive such funds and to spend such amounts as are sanctioned by the Executive Committee.
19 It is expected from all officers and members to carryout all activities of the organisation consistent with the spirit of this constitution20 NOTICE
Notice may be served upon a member either by post or email. Seven days notice showing the time, place and agenda for all members for all meetings.
Notice can be given together for two general meetings which out to have been convened for passing and ratifying special resolutions.
No proceedings of a meeting shall be invalid by reason of any member not present in the meeting.
21 DISSOLUTION
The executive committee may at any time decide to dissolve the organisation. To do so it shall carry a special general meeting at which the final decision rest. The fund of the organisation shall be donated to other organisations or charities or individuals on the basis the general meeting decision.
21 AMENDMENTS
Any amendments to the constitution shall be allowed at a meeting provided there is a simple majority of the members present.
22 This constitution was adopted as the constitution of the SANGEETHA OF THE U.K at a meting duly convened at secretaries residence on 24th April 1991 and was subsequently amended on at a meeting held at Archbishop Lanfranc School, Micham Road, Croydon,Surrey
